We cannot talk about zero waste without talking about paper towels. Many love them  they buy those kitchen rolls which have a bad effect on the environment. A piece of paper to clean your hands, to clean your kitchen top, to absorb the oil of fried foods or to blow your nose in….these are only a few of the many things people use these paper towels, but are they really necessary!?

Are we sure that we cannot use something else, which might have less impact on the environment?

The production of paper towels uses trees, inks, whitening chemicals and petrol even for the plastic which covers it up….let’s try to eliminate it!

    • At the table: we have been using proper fabric napkins for many years now, and despite the fact that we need to wash them, I have always found a small space in my washing machine for them without any need for extra washing costs.

    •  In the kitchen: clean the kitchen using sponges or cloths made in special microfiber. These are really great to clean and washable over and over, they never get ruined to do invest in them!

-If you need to absorb something in the kitchen use a fabric cloth, we have lots in our house.

-To absorb the oil after frying your food use normal brown paper bags maybe from the bread from the bakery.

-If you need to filter foods, use muslin cotton fabric it works well and you can then wash it.

    • For your nose: well, this one is easy, invest in nice fabric klennex, we have done so and my daughters love them. They say that they are much softer than paper ones. When they are dirty I just throw them in the washing machine, dry them flat and fold them, it is easy and fast!

    • To clean the house: it is simple, just use cleaning fabric cloths, maybe make them from old t-shirts, shirts, table cloths, old towels or old sheets. They will work fine even if you need to clean windows or any other area of your house.

Therefore I suggest to all of you to use house cloths and invest in lots, so that you always have some clean to use around the house.
